Abstract

This research explores the multifaceted historical roots and antecedents that have contributed to the emergence and perpetuation of terrorism in Nigeria. The study delves into the complex socio-political landscape of the nation, tracing the origins of terrorism from pre-colonial times to the present day. By employing a comprehensive historical analysis, the research aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the factors that have fueled the growth of terrorism within the Nigerian context. The investigation begins with an examination of pre-colonial Nigeria, exploring tribal conflicts, religious tensions, and economic disparities that laid the groundwork for later unrest. The study employs a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on historical records, scholarly works, and firsthand accounts to analyze the evolution of extremist ideologies and the motivations driving terrorist activities in Nigeria. Furthermore, it considers the role of external influences, global geopolitical dynamics, and transnational networks in shaping the trajectory of terrorism within the nation. By shedding light on the historical antecedents of terrorism in Nigeria, this research seeks to inform policymakers, scholars, and the general public about the complex roots of the issue. Ultimately, a deeper understanding of these historical factors is crucial for formulating effective strategies to address and mitigate the contemporary challenges posed by terrorism in Nigeria.
